Why ‘Core Competency’ Is Important To A Startup

What is core competency you may ask?

Well, I like the answer that Norm Brodsky gives in his book, The Knack:

“It was the one thing we had that our competitors couldn’t offer, and by the time they caught up, we had a foothold in the market and were known for providing that service.

What is the one thing your company can do quickly or efficiently that will put you a step ahead of your nastiest competitors? (You know, the ones who lack one ethical and unique bone in their body)

The answer to this will be your core competency.

Take Amazon for example. They changed the scope of e-reading with the Kindle. No one was thinking ahead to offer e-reading the way in which Amazon packaged it. They understood book lovers better and they made e-reading a trend for the modern world! And although there are tons of e-readers now, none match the easy-read of the Kindle, or the tons of books available through Kindle. They had a foothold in the market before their competitors could catch up.

When I work with a startup who has been on the market for at least six months, we try to find or establish this core competency. It is like the “ah-ha” moment for a startup.

I hope you find your ah-ha moment.

Marketing Can Be As Simple As…

What exactly do you want your marketing to do for you?

This month I helped a friend work on the marketing strategy for his marketing campaign (a 3-month campaign set to start in the summer).

Over lunch, we created the strategy, conferenced his web advisor and graphics consultant, emailed his ad campaign specialist, talked to his exhibit company (you know the ones who decorate the table for an exhibition, expo or showroom), and met his PR person for dessert.

While meeting with all these people, I decided to phone a friend–a marketing genius who I hardly get to talk to because he’s so busy traveling to speak on the topic.

“Any advice you can give us, dear wise one?” I asked jokingly.

On Taking Your Business Global

Last month a friend reminded me of how easy it can be to expand a business; even when it seems impossible at the time. Like going global for instance.

Our conversation led me to write this article in Forbes about why Women Entrepreneurs Should Look Into Doing Business in China. Seems daunting? It does until you start to do some research and tackle smaller steps (like you would do in any business or start-up).

This friend had started his business in a coffee shop and now he’s doing business in China, South Africa, Liberia, and America.

How To Get Creative With Your New Business Checklist

Whether you’re transitioning in business or starting a business, you’ve probably heard some overused business lingo or terminology, and lots of contradictory and conventional business advice. As a newbie, it can all be overwhelming.

So, when presented with conventional v. creativity, always choose Creativity…

A Different way to approach your New Business Checklist:

  1. Instead of just checking off  ’get a website’: Brainstorm a way to have people find you on the web, learn about your business, and contact you if they want to.  This could be a blog site, a Facebook page, a Flavors Page (flavors.me) a LinkedIn profile, a landing page, a squeeze page, etc. (If you’re not familiar with any of these terms, google them and learn).
  2. Instead of just checking off  ’Start a Newsletter’: Organize your thoughts and expertise, so that you pass on your knowledge to your potential clients.  Then once you sign these clients, you will still need to organize your thoughts and expertise, so that you keep your current or former clients updated, while passing on your knowledge to them.
